Hollywood loves that version. So do many preachers. The Greek language doesn't. The word apokalypsis , from which "apocalypse" is derived, simply means an unveiling, a disclosure, a revelation. Before it became associated with catastrophe, it described the act of pulling back a curtain so that something hidden could finally be seen. That raises an uncomfortable question. The millions of Kenyans who received the vaccine now live with the fear of potential side effects, while those who hesitated are left wondering whether they dodged a bullet.

The West, eager to showcase their scientific prowess, rushed to push their vaccines onto developing nations like Kenya, without fully understanding the risks or consequences. So, what is the way forward for Kenya?

First and foremost, we must demand accountability from those responsible for this debacle. AstraZeneca must be held accountable for the lives lost and the suffering caused by their vaccine. Compensation should be provided to those affected, and measures must be put in place to ensure that such a tragedy never happens again.

Furthermore, Kenya must reassess its approach to vaccine distribution and development. We cannot continue to rely on the whims of profit-driven Western pharmaceutical companies for our health security. Instead, we must invest in local research and development, building our capacity to respond to future pandemics independently.
