BREAKING: Malawi Vice President Saulos Klaus Chilima Missing After Plane Fails to Land

A military aircraft carrying Malawi's Vice President, Saulos Klaus Chilima, has gone missing after it failed to make a scheduled landing on Monday morning, according to a government statement.

Disappearance Details
The plane, which departed just after 9:00 am local time (0700 GMT), was carrying Vice President Chilima, 51, and nine others.

"All efforts by aviation authorities to make contact with the aircraft since it went off the radar have failed thus far," the government announced.

Immediate Search and Rescue Efforts
In response, President Lazarus Chakwera has ordered regional and national forces to launch an immediate search and rescue operation to locate the missing aircraft. Chakwera has also cancelled his planned trip to the Bahamas to oversee the search efforts personally.

Background of Saulos Chilima
Chilima, a prominent figure in Malawian politics, was stripped of his powers in 2022 following his arrest on corruption charges related to a bribery scandal involving a British-Malawian businessman. Despite these allegations, a Malawian court dropped the charges last month after multiple court appearances by Chilima.

Regional and International Context
This incident comes amid a tense regional atmosphere.
Just recently, fighting between clans in central Somalia resulted in at least 55 deaths. Additionally, Uganda has seen the release of a detained activist, albeit in poor condition, and suspected Islamists in eastern Congo have killed over 80 individuals in the past week.

Ongoing Developments
As the search for the missing plane intensifies, the Malawian government is expected to provide updates on any progress. The disappearance of Vice President Chilima has already prompted widespread concern and speculation, both domestically and internationally.
