The Perils of Political Transformation: William Ruto's Journey from "Opposition" to Power

In the theatre of political dynamics, there exists a recurring narrative where figures ascend to prominence by vociferously opposing a prevailing order, only to embody the very principles they once denounced. This phenomenon, starkly observable in contemporary Kenyan politics, reveals a troubling trend that transcends mere political theatre, implicating fundamental issues of governance, integrity, and national identity. The Ruto Paradox: From Anti-State Capture to the Heart of Power William Ruto’s rise to political prominence was rooted in a fervent opposition to the concept of “deep state” and systemic state capture. His campaign resonated with many Kenyans disillusioned by entrenched corruption and elite manipulation. Ruto positioned himself as the champion of the ordinary citizen, a beacon of reform against the opaque machinations of entrenched power. However, upon assuming office, the very principles that propelled Ruto to power seemed to erode. His administration, initially celebr...

William Ruto's Political Masterstroke: The Marginalisation and Destruction of Mount Kenya Is Complete

The once unassailable political fortress that was Mount Kenya now lies fragmented and in tatters, a testament to President William Ruto’s strategic manipulation and exploitation.

By leveraging internal discontent and using Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua as a pawn, Ruto has effectively sidelined the Kikuyu community, reducing their political relevance.

The Seeds of Division
Mount Kenya's political dominance was historically anchored by its unity under leaders like Uhuru Kenyatta. However, economic struggles and governance failures during Kenyatta's second term sowed seeds of dissatisfaction. Ruto seized this discontent, presenting himself as a populist saviour, and drove a devastating wedge between the Kikuyus and Kenyatta. The cows are only now coming home to roost.

Rigathi Gachagua: A Tool for Manipulation
Rigathi Gachagua’s rise as Ruto's running mate was a diabolically calculated move. Gachagua's personal vendetta against Kenyatta and his populist appeal made him an ideal candidate to mobilise Kikuyu support for Ruto. However, this alliance was always more about Ruto's ambitions than Gachagua's influence.

The 2022 Elections: A Pyrrhic Victory
The 2022 elections saw Ruto secure the presidency by exploiting Kikuyu discontent. Gachagua played his part well, but his significance dwindled once Ruto took office. Marginalised and politically isolated, Gachagua’s influence within the administration was minimal, exposing the hollow nature of his role.

The Aftermath: Political Irrelevance
With rumors of Ruto considering Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru as his next running mate for 2027, the Kikuyu community faces further marginalisation. This move underscores Ruto’s strategy of maintaining control by perpetually offering the deputy presidency as a carrot, while keeping actual power centralised.

A Fragmented Future
The fragmentation of the Kikuyu community is complete, their political unity shattered. As Ruto consolidates power, Mount Kenya's once-dominant influence in Kenyan politics has been significantly diminished. The community must now navigate a landscape where their traditional stronghold offers them little leverage, demanding a reassessment of their political strategies and alliances.

As Kikuyus weep about being duped to abandon Uhuru Kenyatta, their muthamaki, the regret sweeping across Mount Kenya is palpable.
They now see how they were played like LUDO, manipulated into dividing their once formidable political unity. This painful realisation underscores the strategic brilliance and ruthlessness of Ruto’s political manoeuvres, leaving the Kikuyu community to reckon with the consequences of their choices and the diminished relevance they now face in the national political landscape.
